John Ridley is an American screenwriter, film director, novelist, and showrunner, known for his work on “12 Years a Slave,” for which he won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He is also the creator and showrunner of the critically acclaimed anthology series “American Crime.” His most recent work is the documentary film “Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992” .

Ridley is also the author of seven published novels, including “What Fire Cannot Burn” from Warner Books and “The Drift” from Knopf. His first novel, “Stray Dogs,” was made into the feature film “U Turn” directed by Oliver Stone .

In addition to his work in film and literature, Ridley has been a commentator for National Public Radio and a regular contributor to California Connected, an award-winning news magazine. He has also hosted “Movie Club with John Ridley” on AMC and wrote, directed, and produced the popular TV show “Barbershop” formerly on Showtime .
